How does a hand model shoot actually go? What should you do to prepare—and what should you avoid? In this article, professional hand model Nicole shares her top tips.
About Nicole
My name is Nicole de Vos and I’ve been working as a hand model for over 15 years. I’ve done shoots for brands like Heineken, Coca-Cola, Philips and Royal Asscher Diamonds. Based on my experience, here are my top tips:
1. Keep hands and nails well groomed
Beautiful, neat hands are the foundation of every shoot. If needed, get a manicure the day before.
2. Practice in front of the mirror
Every shoot is different. In general, long, elegant fingers look best. Practice holding various objects in different ways to see what looks good.
3. Research the brand
Know who you’re working for. Understanding the client helps you better match their vision.
4. Wear comfortable clothing
Sometimes you’ll be in odd positions under tables or behind boards. Comfort matters!
5. Dress in layers
Cold hands turn red, hot hands show veins. Layer your clothes so you can regulate your body temperature easily.
6. Bring a manicure kit
Quick touch-ups on set can make a difference—file your nails, apply cream, and use cuticle oil as needed.
7. Bring snacks
You need steady hands, not shaky ones from hunger!
8. Arrive early
There are often many people on set prepping. Be punctual to avoid holding anyone up.
9. Listen carefully to the client
A clear understanding of what the client wants leads to a smooth, successful shoot.
10. Bring something to pass the time
Shoot days can involve a lot of waiting. Bring a book or magazine for downtime.
